Australia To Double The Intake of Refugees From Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur (VOCR) 12 May, 2011: For the Australian, the news of a decision on accepting 4,000 refugees from Malaysia, in exchange for Australia sending 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia from its shore—for those penetrating the illegal entry into the Australian shore by boats through the obvious help of human-traffickers, is a the talk of the nationwide and hugely impacting the neighbor countries as well.

Soon after, Julia Gillard, the prime minister of Australia last week announced in-principle deal with the Najib government, several news agencies from inside Australia rushed to land Malaysia in a bid to compile information from refugees as well as hand-on-hand interviews with particular recognised refugees that includes the tireless help of community leaders.

The reciprocal deal, which will cost $ 300 million over four years—arranging the intake of 4,000 recognised refugees, is an awesome news for refugees miserably stranding in Malaysia but it is not yet known when its operation will be begun. Actually, for asylum seekers those are to be sent back to Malaysia and having a regular processing with the Malaysia UNHCR office, it must be surely very difficult and desperate to bear their pains and their hopes of resettling to Australia can be partly or totally in vain.

Having said that it is also important to identify the core protection safeguards for the coming asylum seekers from the shore of Australia that is the greatest anxiety of the opposition party in Australia as well as human rights watchdogs as the human rights record of Malaysia the Amnesty International published last year shows much is still needed to be developed in order to keep pace with the third world standards.

Apparently, on the Gilliard government's deal, the opposition parties made their criticism public, describing it as "appalling and panicked".
However, it was learnt that the Gillard government, according to journalists working for Australian news agencies fortunately met with The VOCR, has confirmed the new proposal for the intake of 4000 refugees from Malaysia as conjointly agreed with the Malay government. "For this process, it is important that the entire operation will be conducted under the auspices of UNHCR and IOM (International Organization for Migration)" said Mr. Najib, the Malaysian prime minister while attending the ASEAN summit. It is likely to begin implementing the intake in the very near future, Mrs Shaan for The Australian quoted as saying.

Mr. Patrick, health coordinator of CRC, with whom most interviews with The Australian, Sydney Hereld and ABC of Australia were done, noted that the recent proposal is a true good news for refugees who are in Malaysia with overwhelming problems and that also means that many could have a hope of resettling to Australia, provided that the UNHCR administration itself opens door wide for Chins, our people.
